Stockport Council has teamed up with local business Litmus Sustainability to provide affordable, expert-led Carbon Literacy training to organisations in the Greater Manchester borough.

Stockport has already been named a hotspot for the UK’s net zero economy, according to the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) think-tank.

To help more organisations in the borough accelerate their journey to net zero, Stockport Council’s Climate Action Now (CAN) programme has developed its own bespoke Carbon Literacy course, designed exclusively by and for Stockport organisations.

Carbon Literacy gives participants the foundational knowledge they need to understand, communicate and take action on climate change.

Over the course of one day’s worth of training on 13th May, participants will:

  • Build sufficient climate knowledge to hold constructive conversations
  • Network with like-minded businesses
  • Draft a sustainability action plan
  • Learn what high-impact climate action means for their organisation
  • Access exclusive video resources.
  • Participants will also receive official certification from the Carbon Literacy Project following
  • successful completion of the course, becoming part of the 80,000-strong community of Carbon Literate accredited individuals across the country.

Local businesses Litmus Sustainability, musicMagpie, One+All and BASF have all been involved in developing the course content, alongside Manchester Metropolitan University.

Liz Atherton, Climate Action Now Programme Manager, said:

“Supporting Stockport businesses to increase their own sustainability and reduce greenhouse gas emissions is key to us achieving our shared goal of becoming a carbon neutral borough by 2038.  Stockport’s green economy is already growing and we want all businesses and residents in the borough to benefit from that.

“This course was piloted with a range of local businesses in 2023 and was a huge success, with lots of great feedback from attendees. We heard that doing the course opened participants’ eyes to the challenges and opportunities of climate change, that it helped businesses create a sustainability action plan, and gave them tools to confidently communicate their journey to customers.“

Laurence Adams, Head of Sustainability at Litmus Sustainability, added:

“This course will give you the tools to really understand what climate change means to you and your organisation and what you can do about it. The more employees that have these skills within an organisation, the better positioned it will be to navigate the challenges and opportunities of a low carbon economy. It’s a perfect way to upskill yourself for the future.

“You’re guaranteed to leave with plenty of ideas to take back to your organisation, and it’s also a great opportunity to meet and learn alongside like minded peers from other organisations in Stockport.”

We Mean Business Carbon Literacy training will take place on 13th May in Stopford House, Stockport town centre.
